East Devon 112-4 (B Green 67*, J Telford 16) beat North Devon 106 all out (S Lathwell 22, T Gidney 21; G Southall-Brown 2-12, D Pyle 1-1) by 6 wickets

On a blustery day, and on a damp wicket, the toss was always going to be a good one to win. Luckily for the ‘East’ the coin came down in their favour and home Captain Jamie Telford had no hesitation in asking the North to bat. This proved to be a good decision as batting looked difficult with the ball swinging early, aided by some movement off the seam.

It was the third over when Ben Green struck to claim the first wicket. Despite the ball being lofted in the air a few times, the North’s batsmen managed to find the gaps and a promising partnership of 37 came to an end when Lathwell (22) was well caught by Paddy Poustie behind the stumps. Shortly after, Tom Gidney was bowled by Dom Gaywood for 21 and this opened the way for the East to collect wickets regularly. From 52 for 3, the North were reduced to 106 all out with only Knill (10 ) and Keighley (15) making double figures.

All of the East bowlers took wickets, with George Southall-Brown (5-1-12-2) and Dan Pyle (3-2-1-1) probably taking the honours as the most consistent two.

After an indulgent tea, the East’s reply did not start too well. The North needed early wickets if they were to have a chance, and with some loose shots, the batsmen duly obliged as the East were reduced to 56 for 4, with only Jamie Telford (16) putting up any resistance.

As the wicket dried and the change bowlers came into the attack, Ben Green got the measure of a drying wicket and set about the bowling with gusto. From 56 for 4 in 12 overs, Ben Green smashed the bowling to all parts and the East reached 112 for 4 from 17.4 overs, Green finishing unbeaten on 67 from 38 balls, including 6 fours and 6 sixes, to be Man of the Match.
